What are Stink Bugs?

Stink Bugs are dark-brown bugs with a triangular-looking plate or shield on their backs, they may also be known as a shield bug. They are small and only grow to about 3/4″ of an inch in length. The brown Stink Bug is an invasive pest that is known to live throughout most of the United States. This species is native to Asia and was introduced in the mid-1990s, making its way here from inside a shipping container.

They have been identified in 38 states and in the District of Columbia. They are known for destroying high-value crops and plants and have caused major economic damage in the mid-atlantic region.

Stink Bugs get their name from the pungent odor they release from their gland located on their abdomen when they feel threatened or if they have been handled or have been crushed. They emit this odor to defend themselves from predators.

Are Stink Bugs dangerous?

Stink Bugs are not a danger to humans, however, they can be detrimental to house plants and crops. Stink Bugs are more of a nuisance to humans and pets since they seek out shelter during the winter inside of homes and other buildings. Stink Bugs do not bite people or pets nor do they transmit disease or cause any physical harm.

What effects do Stink Bugs have on my home or business?

Marmorated Stink Bugs become an annual nuisance to homeowners or businesses because they gather in large numbers  on the sides of houses in late Autumn and enter these buildings to survive the grueling North East Winters.

Without any proper stink bug treatment, your New Jersey residential or commercial property may endure many effects from these intrusive pests. The most popular effect is the damage they can cause plant-life in your home or business by extracting fluids from plants leaving them without the ability to continue to grow.

Having Stink Bugs in your business is not only unsanitary but very unpleasant to your customers due to the pungent odor they emit. Stink bugs are not poisonous, however, their presence can have a negative effect on your business.
